Elizabeth Murray

Elizabeth Murray, the daughter of Alexander Murray and Ann Kidd, was born on November 17, 1861 in the Bridgeton district of Glasgow, county of Lanark, Scotland. She died on February 26, 1923 at the Bright Side Sanitorium in Teaneck, New Jersey (USA).

Elizabeth's mother died in 1878, leaving her father Alexander with several young children to raise. However, his occupation at the time was Steamship Stoker. Sometime between Ann Kidd's death and the 1881 census, twenty year old Elizabeth had moved from the family home to a new address, and had taken care of two of her surviving younger siblings, ten year old Mary Murray, and fifteen year old William John Murray. By the time Elizabeth married, both siblings were old enough to be on their own, although no further records have been found yet for Mary Murray.

On February 25, 1887 in Glasgow, Scotland, Elizabeth married Peter Johnson. According to their marriage record, Peter was the son of Peter Johnson and Mary Paterson. Family lore, although not proven, says Peter's original surname was Jensen, but he changed it because Elizabeth supposedly would not marry him until then. She wanted it to sound less foreign and more Scottish. This in itself puts the reason for the change in doubt, because although she was born in Scotland, she herself was not of Scottish descent, but of Irish instead. Peter was born in Denmark on July 7, 1865, and died on May 2, 1919 in Carlstadt, New Jersey (USA). Their marriage record lists Elizabeth as 23 years old, and Peter as 22. However, this is incorrect. Elizabeth's official birth record states that she was born in 1861. Peter's death record, as well as his US Citizenship application state that his birth date was July 7, 1865. Perhaps the clerk who recorded the marriage made a mistake. But it is possible that Elizabeth, or possible both she and Peter, lied about their ages so it would not appear that Elizabeth was that much older than him. She was 25 at the time, not 23, and Peter was only 21.

Elizabeth and Peter immigrated to the United States in 1889, and settled in "East New York", or Manhattan, Queens, New York, where their children were born. They had several children (at least six), but only two survived:

  1. Peter Johnson (1896-1978)
  2. Marie Johnson (~1898-~1916)

After the 1900 census, but prior to 1910, the family moved to East Rutherford, New Jersey.
