Müller Family Genealogy

Not very much is known about this Müller family. It was originally assumed by the family, due to the German-sounding surname, that the Müller's were indeed from Germany. This particular family is of German descent, but they originated in France, near the German border, in a territory which became known as Alsace-Lorraine. Alsace-Lorraine was a territorial entity created by the German Empire in 1871 after the annexation of most of Alsace and parts of Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian War.

The Treaty of Frankfurt gave the residents of the region until October 1, 1872 to choose between emigrating to France or remaining in the region and having their nationality legally changed to German. The Müller's in this family tree decided to leave, and immigrated to the United States in 1871. They settled in Newark, New Jersey, and throughout the census years, listed their nationality as either French and German. Whether it was their doing, or that of the census taker, is unknown.
