James McCartney

James McCartney, the son of Hugh McCartney and Susan Carlon, was born about 1834 in Ireland, possibly in or around Londonderry. He died on September 17, 1887 in the United States, in West Orange, New Jersey.

James immigrated to the US with his mother and three siblings prior to 1860, and possibly in 1858. Speculation is that they came through Philadelphia, rather than New York. There is also no record of father Hugh McCartney arriving or living with any of the family.

James became a naturalized U.S. Citizen on 11/5/1860, which was witnessed by a Patrick McCartney, possibly his brother.

On November 17, 1861, at St. John's R.C. Church in Orange, New Jersey, James married Catherine Mooney, daughter of Neil Mooney and Eliza McCoy. Catherine was born in September 1842 in Brooklyn, New York, and died on August 4, 1914, in West Orange, New Jersey.

James and Catherine had the following known children:

  1. Hugh McCartney (~1862-bef 1930)
  2. Ellen McCartney (~1864-??)
  3. Susan McCartney (~1867-??)
  4. Catherine McCartney (~1869-aft. 1900)
  5. James Francis McCartney (~1871-1953)
  6. Mary E. McCartney (~1873-aft. 1900)
  7. Elizabeth McCartney (~1876-aft. 1900)
  8. Anna (Annie) McCartney (~1877-aft. 1920, possibly aft. 1930)
  9. Neil McCartney (~1879-possibly bef. 1880)
  10. Rosita McCartney (1882-1960)
  11. William F. McCartney (1885-1937)
