Thomas Vallance Johnston

Thomas Vallance Johnston, the son of David Swan Johnston and Catherine Vallance, was born on March 25, 1871 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and died sometime between 1910 and 1918 in New Jersey.

Thomas immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1880's, possibly early 1990's, and settled in Newark, New Jersey. He was later joined by his younger brother Alexander Johnston.

On October 23, 1898, in Newark, New Jersey, Thomas married Clara Schweitzer, daughter of Oswald Schweitzer and Clara Bach. Clara was born in September of 1875. Her date and place of death is unknown.

Thomas and Clara had the following known children:

  1. John Schweitzer Johnston (1898-aft. 1930)
  2. David Johnston (1900-aft. 1930)

After Thomas' death, Clara remarried and had another child with her new husband, Edward Wooster. On June 25, 1930 Clara's 30+ year old sons John and David (both divorced by then) both applied to legally change their surname from Johnston to Wooster.
